Morgana Run Trail

The Morgana Run Trail, a 2-mile bicycling and walking path stretching from E. 49th Street to Jones Road near Broadway Avenue is one of our community’s best-kept secrets and a national model for engaging urban communities through trails.  Residents can bike down the Morgana Run Trail to the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath trail or to the Cleveland Metroparks Garfield Park Reservation.

Weaving its way through Broadway Slavic Village, the Morgana Run Trail is a model for transportation-related activities that promote urban revitalization, enhance transportation opportunities and improve pedestrian and vehicle safety. This rail-trail, which utilizes a majority of a former Wheeling & Lake Erie Rail line, connects residents and visitors to the Cleveland Metroparks Mill Creek Park and Trail through the Slavic Village/Broadway and Aetna-Union neighborhoods of Cleveland over to Washington Park and the new First Tee Golf Course. It also connects residents to Stella Walsh Recreation Center, Union Elementary, the new Boys & Girls Club, Cleveland Central Catholic High School, St. Stanislaus Elementary and Mound Elementary School, providing a safe and alternative route to schools and recreational facilities for our community’s youth.

Trail heads are located at the Broadway/Miles intersection; Broadway/Ackley intersection, on Blanche Avenue off of E. 55th; and on E. 49th Street.  Check out the full map below:

Morgana Run Trail is part of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Urban Pathway Initiative, a national program that advocates for equitable investment in underserved communities while promoting the health, transportation and environmental benefits of trail use. Along the trail you’ll find an assortment of exciting projects that enhance the trail experience, including the RotaFlora sculpture and the soon to arrive bird house public art project.  Following are just a few of the characteristics that make Morgana Run Trail one-of-a-kind and a true Slavic Village gem:

Public Art

As part of the public art program for Slavic Village’s Morgana Run Trail, Slavic Village Development worked with Cleveland Public Art and ParkWorks to develop a marker for the trail’s East 49th Street trailhead. The 35-foot-tall flower sculpture composed of steel, bicycle wheels, and LED lighting, beautifies and brings attention to this trailhead. The sculpture was designed by artist Jake Beckman and fabricated by Signature Sign Company of Cleveland.

Morgana Run Trail Savannah

The Morgana Run Trail Savannah is a new community project that is creating a pseudo-Prairie/Savannah complete with prairie grasses, sedges, and scattered oak trees to reconstitute the soils of a Brownfield site along the Morgana Run Trail. The project enhances not only aesthetic values, but ecological diversity through the creation of a habitat meant to attract wildlife and will have a long-term ecological value to the once-fallow site.

Pierogi Dash 5K

The Slavic Village Pierogi Dash 5K (originally the Morgana RUN 5K) began in 2006 as a way to engage neighborhood residents in physical activity and to introduce them to the new Morgana Run Trail.  Since that first year the event has doubled in size and become a neighborhood favorite.  Where else can you enjoy pierogies and smokies before 11am?!  Held each June, the Pierogi Dash 5K offers a unique experience to spend some time with friends and family in the neighborhood.
