The $8.86 MM Fleet Avenue project is underway! Karvo Paving Incorporated has started phase I of the project at the eastern end of Fleet Ave. Phase 1 will involve the repair and resurfacing of the street between Broadway and East 65th. Traffic will be limited to one lane , for eastbound traffic westbound traffic will be detoured south on East 71st, west on Harvard Ave., then north on Washington Park Boulevard. Phase I is expected to be complete in a few short months, by January 2015.
Phase II will include the bulk of the project. This will involve the removal and replacement of the existing roadway and sidewalk between Independence Road and E. 65th Street. This second phase also consists of new streetscape features including a new landscaped entry median, colored crosswalks, landscape planters, wayfinding signage, ADA ramps, traffic signals, street furniture, and bike lanes. Additionally, a new $1.8 MM bioswale and park will be installed at E. 53rd Street. This will be built as an important component of the NEORSD efforts to reduce run off in the combined sewer overflows. Plans also call for traffic calming measures such as curb bump-outs at intersections to narrow the distance of pedestrian crosswalks and to preserve on-street parking. Phase II is expected to be complete July 2016.
Fleet Avenue will remain open to traffic though out the entire construction project. All properties and local businesses will remain open and accessible; to avoid traffic congestion it is suggested to approach local businesses via the north and south connector streets. Although street parking on Fleet Avenue will be limited, all local businesses will maintain access to their parking facilities.
