Tuesday, February 21st is Paczki Day! This year, Seven Roses at 6301 Fleet Ave.will feature a variety of delicious paczki on Fat Tuesday. Fillings will include the traditional plum and rosehips, as well as custard, apricot, strawberry, poppy seed and lemon.

Queen of the Parade Search

The Polish Constitution Day Parade is hosting a search for its 2012 Queen of the Parade. All young ladies 16 & older and who are of Polish descent are invited to compete.

Fleet Avenue Funded

Last Thursday, the District One Public Works Integrating Committee (DOPWIC) approved a grant of $4.2 million for road and streetscape improvements for Fleet Avenue. The rest of the money for the $6 million project will come from the city of Cleveland and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD).

The Fleet project includes street and sidewalk improvements to the section of Fleet between I77 and Broadway. Plans call for streetscape improvements, green infrastructure, and bicycle lanes to be installed between East 49^th and East 65^th Streets. Also included are plans for bump-outs at intersections to reduce the distance of pedestrian crosswalks and to preserve on-street parking.

Councilman Tony Brancatelli said the project is critical to attracting investment to Slavic Village and rebounding from the impacts of the housing market crash.

Funds for the project will be available in July. Engineering for the project is slated to begin in the fall and take a year to complete. The project should be ready for construction in late 2013 or early 2014.

Visitors to the Polish American Cultural Center in Slavic Village can get a fresh perspective on the east European nation at an exhibit installed in the center’s museum on Lansing Avenue at East 65^th Street, near Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.

“People need to understand that Poland is far more than castles and farmland, that it’s every bit as advanced as other Western nations.” said the center’s director, Gene Bak

The Slavic Village exhibit is comprised of large scale photographs showing the nation’s key regions.

They include dazzling images of sleek new architecture, streamlined shopping malls, and sweeping, sunlit landscapes punctuated by clusters of windmills generating renewable energy.

Ward 12 Councilman Anthony Brancatelli called Gene Bak’s cultural center a gem among the neighborhood’s organizations.

It’s open to visitors at midday Sundays for tours and brunch.
