Fleet Avenue Funded
Last Thursday, the District One Public Works Integrating Committee (DOPWIC) approved a grant of $4.2 million for road and streetscape improvements for Fleet Avenue. The rest of the money for the $6 million project will come from the city of Cleveland and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD). The Fleet project includes street and sidewalk improvements to the section of Fleet between I77 and Broadway. Plans call for streetscape improvements, green infrastructure, and bicycle lanes to be installed between East 49th and East 65th Streets. Also included are plans for bump-outs at intersections to reduce the distance of pedestrian crosswalks and to preserve on-street parking. Councilman Tony Brancatelli said the project is critical to…

RENOVATION PROJECTS AROUND SLAVIC VILLAGE ARE RIGHT ON SCHEDULE
BROADWAY AVENUE RENOVATIONS RIGHT ON SCHEDULE The wicked winter weather and the monsoon months of this past spring have not put a damper on the rehab and re-construction progress along Broadway Avenue. According to Slavic Village Development’s Commercial Development Officer, Ben Campbell, construction workers have done an excellent job of making up for lost time as a result of this year’s uniquely, unusual weather. “The days of constant rain this spring made it challenging to work on the roads,” Campbell said. “But it’s clear to anyone who has driven along Broadway on the nice days that these workers aren’t wasting any time. Their progress has been great.” The project’s current phase, from Aetna Road to…
NEW FACE OF FAITH AND FELLOWSHIP COMES TO SLAVIC VILLAGE
A new face of faith and fellowship has arrived in the Hyacinth neighborhood. Earlier this summer, members of the Elizabeth Baptist Church, previously located on Holton Avenue in Cleveland, officially moved into the former St. Hyacinth Church at E. 61st and Francis. “We got and prayed,” says Jacque Gillon, an active member of the Church. “We knew we were supposed to be here.” And already that positive energy has been felt by the community. One of the first ways that the Church made its new, nearly 3 ½ acre location home was by creating a community garden in the previously vacant lots across from the entrance to the church. KeyBank volunteers even assisted members of…
SLAVIC VILLAGE’S “ENERGIZER” INTERNS…THEY JUST KEEP GOING AND GOING!!
By: Sean Balewski Slavic Village Development hit the ‘intern jackpot’ this summer, attracting a record breaking nine young interns from Arizona State, Cornell, Kent, Tri-C, Oberlin, Ohio University, Princeton, the University of Colorado, and the University of Rochester, who devoted all or part of their summer to some of our most exciting projects. This year’s group featured college students and young professionals with a broad range of skills and experiences, ranging from a U.S. Marine Corps Reservist, to a Florida TV reporter, to a cyclist who biked from Ohio to California. The energy and vitality from this bunch of 20-somethings have left lasting impressions throughout the hallowed streets and halls of Broadway Slavic Village. “Having…

Fast Track: Can Indoor Bike Racing Rescue Slavic Village?
VIA | Freshwater Cleveland Marie Kittredge recalls firsthand when the national foreclosure crisis landed in her beloved neighborhood of Slavic Village. “In a short period there were about a dozen empty houses on East 75th Street [off of Broadway],” says Kittredge, Executive Director of Slavic Village Development (SVD), a nonprofit community organization that serves the neighborhood. For years, shady investors had inflated sales prices by using freshly rehabbed homes as comparables. Ironically, many of these rehabs were fixed up and sold by SVD. “We’d sell a rehabbed home for $80,000 and they’d buy grandma’s house next door for $30,000, slap a coat of paint on it, and sell it for the same price,” Kittredge says. “A…
Small Grants Make Huge Difference in the Destiny of a Neighborhood
VIA | Freshwater Cleveland A mural celebrating cultural diversity. A front-porch concert series. An artist-in-residence inspiring local school children. These may sound like humble projects, but when taken as a whole they are part of a grass-roots movement to help strengthen and define Cleveland’s historic neighborhoods. An arm of the Cleveland Foundation, Neighborhood Connectionsprovides small financial gifts to community organizations focused on enhancing neighborhoods and engaging residents. Grants range from as little as $500 up to $5,000. To be considered for a grant, an organization must illustrate how that project will engage citizens, encourage community pride, and make a positive impact. Successful projects must “connect people with each other in meaningful ways through grass roots and individual…
