Slavic Village Development: Youth Bicycle Education Coordinator (BEC)

Slavic Village Development understands the importance of empowering its local community with the access and knowledge necessary for safe bicycling, among other active living and community engagement priorities. The Bicycle Education Coordinator will assist with planning, implementation, and conclusion of the Bicycle Education Program at Slavic Village Development through the 2012 summer season.

The Bicycle Education program functions as part of the Active Living program and consists of three components: In-school Bikeathons, Earn-a-Bike summer camps, and Farmer’s Market Bike Kitchen. This position will begin as a part time, build to full time through July, and return to part time through August and September.

 

Bikeathons: (5-10%) BEC attends Bikeathons and rallies, assisting with bicycle repair, volunteer assistance, set-up, and tear-down. BEC adds to shared knowledge and assists with identifying future funding sources as well as program improvement and efficiency.

Events scheduled for: May 26 and June 2 from 10am to 2pm

Additionally, attendance suggested at bike rallies: 5/23, 5/30, 5/31 9am

Bikeathons spread message of safe cycling amongst youth, provide bike repair skills, and celebrate with a bike parade, a hands-on way of encourage youth to use their bikes more often, and more safely.

 

Bike Camp: (80%) Slavic Village Riding Tigers (SVRT) is a free earn-a-bike summer camp offered to youth ages 10-13. Kids start on a closed course and work their way up to longer rides, incorporating street, sidewalk, and bike path safety and rules, as well as basic roadside repair and traffic skills. BEC works directly with one other councilor and multiple volunteers and rides with campers, providing direction, first aid and trailside activities. BEC must have basic roadside bike repair knowledge, including repairing rear flat tires and minor brake and derailleur adjustments. BEC also must be responsible for their own bicycle, as well as carrying additional camp supplies. Position is full time during weeks of camp service, as well as providing parent information sessions one evening per week.

 

Farmer’s Market Bike Kitchen: (10%) BEC engages the public to provide basic bike repair and safety knowledge at Monday farmers markets. Position includes setup and teardown, as well as inventory management, reporting to funders, and creating program literature. Repair services must prioritize engagement and education – not simply a free service. Bike Kitchen functions Monday evenings 4-7pm, and runs with staff and volunteer support.

 

Required Skills/Experience:

Directly engaging diverse populations

Proficient in Microsoft office programs: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher

Experience with youth engagement

Basic bicycle repair knowledge required

Experience in non profit grassroots environment preferred
